If I remember correctly, JME was run by someone called Jan something-or-other, so JME stood for Jan MusikElektronik or something like that.
At any rate I have an SPX in my DX-7, and it's quite nice. However the one I have permits 16 memory banks, not four (except I just have the ROM without any memory so I get none...). It works well, the only hickups I've had are when using portamento on DUAL and QUAD sounds; in one of the two DX portamento modes, you only get portamento on one of the two (or four) voices, which is interesting, although perhaps not what is expected.
When you set FUNCTION ENABLE = ON, you can save the FUNCTION parameters along with the program (or as Yamaha would say, voice), however note that the extra parameters never appear over MIDI, so you have to use the internal banks or a RAM cartridge.
Ah...I just got the manual out...there were several versions; the SPX-1 had 4 RAM banks, and the SPX-2 had 16 RAM banks. I think mine powered up with only SPX though (I've changed the startup text to something more friendly) in the display.
Email me if you have any other questions or want to discuss something.

Thanks for your reply: I have learned things!
I have the version 2.6: it gives me 16 banks of sounds as well.
I have the feeling it works somewhat like the TX7 in giving you performance settings for every preset, instead of just global performance settings.
Here is my own recap of what I discovered by exploring... I'd be curious to know if I missed any.
